Workshop on Irregular Migration, 28-29 November 2008, Koç University İstinye Executive Education Center.

Funded by the German Marshall Fund, MiReKoc has started a new project entitled "Irregular Migration at Two Borders: the Turkish-EU and Mexican-USA Cases" for an initial period of one year with a view to create a long-term capacity in fact-finding, policy-debating, and policy-making over the issues of irregular migration, smuggling, and trafficking. The project intends to generate comparative information which aims at being both sufficiently detailed and reliable to offer a comprehensive picture of the structure and process of irregular migration at two different geographical settings, the Turkish-EU and Mexican-USA borders, on which to base appropriate policy response. Accordingly, MiReKoc is organizing its first workshop on irregular migration to be held on 28-29 November 2008 in Istanbul, which will be a fact-finding event for which national experts from Greece, Turkey, Mexico, the USA as well as a few scholars from Europe are asked to prepare descriptive case studies. Policymakers and civil society activists will also be present in the workshop to reflect upon illegal migration, smuggling, human trafficking issues from the mutual perspective of sending and receiving countries.
